A LITTLE ABOUT CHRIS BELLMAN

I grew up in a small suburb of Cincinnati, OH. Since a very early age, I have been extremely interested in technology and using it to enhance the lives of others. At age 11, I started helping my mom with her self-employed, post-IBM pursuits of working and training people to use computers. After I assisted her with troubleshooting several issues, I began forming my own client base. My number of clients grew throughout high school, until I was the main IT provider for over 30 residential clients, 6 small businesses, and a non-profit. I ventured off to Ohio State to become an Electrical & Computer Engineer, and caught the contagious Buckeye Spirit.

After my sophomore year, I interned at Cardinal Health in Dublin, OH. I undertook my first real web development project for half the summer, and spent the other half working with Splunk and data analytics.

After my junior year, I interned at gearDigital, an affiliate company of WilsonRMS. My position was a front-end developer. I made many landing pages (desktop & mobile) and emails for high-profile clients such as GE, Kaiser Permanente, and Charter Business.

I learned many valuable web development skills, and was exposed to NodeJS, Express, graph databases, and several other emerging technologies. Additionally, I really enjoyed watching first hand as a startup developed its platform.

After graduation, I moved to Washington, DC to join Capital One's Technology Development Program. The first part of this rotation was spent working on the main Capital One credit card website. After a few months, my team transitioned into creating an in-house solution to get customer deposits for the Capital One Secured Card. We created the site using React, and were successful in meeting a tight deadline.

For my second rotation, I was able to fulfill my lifelong goal of moving to California, and was placed on the Technology Scan team in our San Francisco office. I worked on internal web and mobile applications, protoyped new technologies, and occasionally met with and helped evaluate startups.

Three years later, I'm still on the Technology Scan team, although my role & the team's function have significantly evolved. I have served as the tech lead for our web & mobile application since Fall 2017 and now lead our 5-person engineering team. Technology Scan pivoted and now works closely with our Growth Ventures division to evaluate emerging technologies and decide if they would fit well in Capital One's technology ecosystem or our Venture Capital arm's growing portfolio.

ALWAYS EXPLORING

In the past few years, I have studied abroad in India, traveled around the Caribbean and Bermuda, backpacked through Europe, cruised the Mexican Riviera, toured Northeastern Canada, and flown all over the U.S. I love experiencing new places and cultures, have loved living in four different cities, and am excited to see where else my journey takes me.

KEY EXPERIENCES

Buckeye Leadership Fellows

WHAT IS BLF?

"The Office of Student Life’s signature leadership development experience, The Buckeye Leadership Fellows Program provides access, offers tools, and creates experiences to empower students to realize their potential and make a positive impact on society. Over the course of a two year period selected students participated in a variety of personal and professional workshops, leadership challenges, and immersive experiences that are co-designed and facilitated by Ohio State alumni and community leaders. The experiential program exposes students to a range of public and private industries and encourages them to think differently about how to apply their skills in a practical way."

WHAT DOES BLF MEAN TO ME?

Buckeye Leadership Fellows has enabled me to achieve success in ways I never imagined. At the core of BLF is a strong curriculum for leadership development. Built on top of that is a network of incredibly supportive and talented professionals. I have met so many incredible people through this program, both in the cohorts and through community supporters.

BLF has given me the confidence and resources to succeed. I easily attribute my acceptance into the Mortar Board Senior Honor Society as well as my selection for Ohio State's 102nd Homecoming Court to this incredible organization and the tools it has provided.

gearDigital

Summer 2014 I had the privilege of interning at a new Columbus startup, gearDigital. This was a very interesting experience for me coming from interning at Cardinal Health the previous summer; there was a dramatic shift from corporate culture to very small company. I chose to work at this startup because I thought doing so would give me a breadth of experience in regards to work environments. My team was incredibly intelligent and supportive. I learned so much about various aspects of web development and am very glad I chose to intern there. I'm very excited to see where this company goes in the future and wish them all the best!

Cardinal Health

The summer after my sophomore year, I was incredibly lucky to intern at the largest company (by revenue) in Ohio, Cardinal Health. My internship focused on developing an administrative management tool (web development) and a project relating to Splunk and data analytics. I fell in love with the company's mission and culture and met some amazing individuals who remain close friends.

India

DELHI, AGRA, JAIPUR, MUMBAI

Part of the BLF program encourages students to have global perspective. To aid us in doing so, they provided the opportunity for my cohort to travel to India. There, we learned about the culture, the history, and the future of this re-emerging country. An incredible trailer of our trip can be found here.

This trip was one of the most impactful weeks of my life. I saw first hand the third largest slum in the world (Dharavi - where Slumdog Millionaire was filmed). I met some incredible students from the University of Delhi and even visited a secluded village in the middle of nowhere in Maharashtra, India. Above all, it gave me perspective about how other people live and gave me a strong desire to explore the rest of the world.
